We shared sustainable best practice through producing seven case studies on green initiatives in multiple ICSs for the South West Greener NHS team.
Objective
The South West Greener NHS team wanted to promote sustainable best practice to support the NHS’ net zero ambitions. They sought help from the SCW Communications team to share learnings from different green initiatives, and to help others to gain ideas and knowledge on effective sustainability projects.
A desirable outcome was to have a case study from each ICS in the South West, and to cover the main target areas for decarbonisation, as set out in the ‘Delivering a Net Zero NHS’ report.
What we did
We worked with the South West team to choose seven initiatives, narrowing this down from a long list, to ensure a different ICS and sustainable topic area for each. These topics included an e-bike initiative, sustainable asthma care, and using local green spaces. Once these were identified, we contacted each ICS to ask for a representative from the project to be interviewed. The interview was split into the overall aims, how they achieved their goals, any challenges, the results and impact of the initiative, and any learning points and next steps.
The case studies were then written up in the same format as the interview questions. We also created PowerPoints to complement each case study, using brand new Greener NHS graphics created by our SCW Design team. Alongside this, we helped some representatives to make engaging videos to be shown alongside the case studies and for use in social media promotions.

Outcome
We enhanced our offering by providing consultation on video format and selection of case studies. This work has been published on the South West Greener NHS team’s Futures page and the PowerPoints are being used in conversations to draw attention to the importance of sustainability initiatives in ICSs. It is important to continue sharing sustainable work and ideas if we are to meet the NHS net zero targets and improve health outcomes for populations.
