South East region learning stories

South East region learning stories

A group of work colleagues having a discussion

Understanding the connections between employee, their working environment(s) and interactions, as well as organisational processes, leadership styles and culture, are fundamental to a human factors approach.

Sharing stories for the purpose of learning from and with each other

NHS SCW's transformation team is supporting NHSE South East colleagues in capturing and celebrating learning stories from across the region. The purpose of this project is to enable the Sout East region’s systems and providers to learn from and with each other to optimise their potential – where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

This work was anchored into Anne Eden’s findings as part of NHS England NHS delivery and continuous improvement review: recommendations.

We wanted to take a different approach from the usual case study format, so we’ve instead created summary stories that quickly get to the heart of the learning. The real power within these stories lies in the fact that each piece of work paid significant attention to the human factors at play. Human factors being the principles that aim to appreciate the connections between an employee, their working environment(s) and interactions, as well as organisational processes, leadership styles and culture.

The golden threads - relating to the human factors - that run across these stories:

  • Ensuring that those who are affected by the change shape the change
  • Gaining executive leadership buy-in early in the lifecycle of the activity
  • Using systems leadership and dialogic methodologies to truly coalesce around common purposes and create new ideas for existing and new challenges
  • Giving time and attention to fostering and nurturing relationships as a lever to mobilising change
  • Creating a culture of action experiment where it’s safe and valuable to learn as we know there is no silver bullet solution for the complex challenges faced.

Learning stories

We have collated learning stories from across the South East region to share with you.

Read this summary story to understand how Frimley Health and Care ICS created the conditions for people to truly coalesce around a common purpose when they were reviewing discharge pathways and improving patient flow.
The story highlights why creating the conditions for people to convene may feel like a luxury but is essential in enabling truly integrated ways of working, processes and decision-making.
