Supporting digital inclusion and sustainability in Oxfordshire

NHS partners are working with the Getting Oxfordshire Online project to create a positive social impact by reusing technology in the community. Getting Oxfordshire Online is a partnership between SOFEA, Aspire, Bicester Green and Citizens Advice to provide technology devices and support to local charities and community groups.

At the start of 2024, NHS South, Central and West was approached by NHS Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West (BOB) ICB to assist in their digital inclusion project to extend the lifespan of electronic devices by redeploying laptops. Not only would this initiative reduce IT waste and improve environmental sustainability but empowering individuals to use technology would also help to bridge the digital divide.

But reusing corporate equipment in the community brought with it risks and challenges and this is where the expertise of our Digital, Data and Technology service was needed. Working collaboratively with the ICB, SOFEA and our suppliers, we provided knowledge and guidance on governance, risk and legislation.

An appropriate secure IT recycling supplier was brought on board and a sustainable solution was approved by the BOB ICB Board and NHS England.

This project aims to address the growing need for accessible technology within our communities while promoting sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Thanks to cooperation with SCW, BlackmoreUK and Getting Oxfordshire Online, we will now be able to refer our citizens from Digital Cafes and digital drop-in sessions to Getting Oxfordshire Online, for technology support. - NHS BOB ICB

As a result of this collaboration, NHS laptops are now able to be safely and sustainably redeployed within local charities and community groups to promote digital inclusion, reduce social isolation and foster employability.

We are delighted that the first batch of ten recycled laptops has just been shipped to a Getting Oxfordshire Online charity. This project is a great example of how the NHS’s net zero ambitions can be aligned with the local need to create positive social value and impact within our communities. - Ian Gatehouse, Service Asset and Configuration Manager at NHS SCW
