Improving productivity and balancing the books are a priority for the NHS. With efficiency targets increasing, NHS providers need to develop skills and share best practice to ensure this challenge is met whilst still improving service quality and reducing backlogs.

Listen to our session recorded at the NHS Providers Annual Conference in November 2023 where we share the process we used in working with a Midlands Acute Trust to help them co-produce a ‘robust and credible’ plan.

We explore how bringing in external support resulted in detailed plans for delivering £24m in 23/24 for the Trust as well as wider lessons learned across systems and providers that optimise delivery of efficiency targets.

Improvement programmes are more than pounds and pence

This session explores how improvement programmes are not just about the pounds and pence but about transforming the way services are delivered.

With the current financial pressures, we need to turn the dial of how we work into a collaborative workspace around finance to help clinicians engage as well as others in the organisation to help break down barriers.

We focused on the ability to deliver and putting the Trust in the best possible position to get to a place where, through co-design, they believed in the delivery of the plan, and they could take it forward.

Vital takeaways

The conference theme this year was ‘Vital’ and there were three vital takeaways from this work:

1.    The importance of sense checking to triangulate the insights gained from benchmarking.
2.    The need for clear communication of the underlying assumptions to be used in the model so that they can be checked and understanding confirmed.
3.    Less is more so 20 schemes were prioritised that would deliver 80% of the value.
