Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire Acute Hospitals Alliance commissioned our data analysts to support their clinical strategy with in-depth data reports.
Challenge
- Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire (BSW) Together Integrated Care System established the Acute Hospital Alliance (AHA) as an Acute Trust Provider Collaborative.
- The AHA brings together the Royal United Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Bath, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Swindon, and Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.
- The collaborative required a deep dive analysis of existing services across their sites as a starting point for sharing best practices and exploring the potential for shaping services to optimise patient care.
What we did
- In 2023, our Business Intelligence (BI) consultants developed an automated process for producing comprehensive deep-dive packs at the touch of a button. Each pack centred around one individual speciality and compared BSW AHA provider services to others within the collaborative. Each provider's peers were identified as the trusts with the most similar attributes and national benchmarking.
- The packs included visual representations of standardized measures, including activity trends and geospatial mapping of travel time to four main sites. Narrative descriptions for the measures were also included to highlight key differences and aid clinical discussions.
- We combined our data expertise with the clinical expertise of BSW AHA to tailor the packs for use at clinicians' weekly meetings.
- Our automated approach enabled us to promptly incorporate feedback from clinical experts and the AHA team, allowing us to swiftly produce new packs for specialties at short notice.
- The production of the deep-dive packs was automated to enable BSW AHA to manage the process on an ongoing basis. To facilitate this transition, we offered comprehensive training from our BI experts.
Activity

Impact
With our support, the BSW AHA was able to:
- Undertake a clinical stocktake to develop a shared understanding of where existing services were focused and which should be prioritised for review.
- Identify areas where alliance members were outperforming their peers, allowing best practices to be recognised and shared across the alliance.
- Align discussions between clinical and non-clinical leads around detailed information using user-friendly visualisations.
- Save significant analyst time by providing such highly detailed information on a regular basis.
